Dear QA professionals! I’m stuck, please help anyone who can!!!
One day I posted something like this to one of QA forums. My problem was the following:
In a window of the application that I tested I found that it has a lot of similar objects that had the same class name and caption and the only difference was that their indexes were not the same. So, the question was: what should I do to find the needed object?!? TestComplete is a great (I would even say – the best) thing for automated testing, but using it I cannot differentiate the objects in a good way. The problem was even worse than I thought, since almost all windows of that application had a set of nice “similar” objects with what I did not know what to do... I plucked all my courage and was already ready to talk seriously to our programmers, when one guy directed me to a tool called My@WndTrepanat. He described it so industriously so this put in doubt: is the tool really does something good, or the guy simply connected to the author (or is the author itself). The name of the tool sounded really odd as well. Besides the fact that it smells like something connected to the corpse, it sounded not very lowly and I did not really believe that the tool might give me anything more than my loved TestComplete or Spy++ that I use occasionally. But why not?
I got to the personal page of the guy and found that the tool was wrote by the same author who created My@LocVarPanel that I found a long time ago and used extensively.
So I moved forward and downloaded My@WndTrepanat to give it a try. My first impression was very good since the tool provided:
- a plug-in for easy integration with TestComplete;
- a nice visualization of the window hierarchy (in colors! so a kid would understand it!!);
- a good window searching functionality;
- an integrated tool for searching a region in an object.
As a whole I was amazed of its usefulness regardless of its odd name and not very presentable look and feel.
Now I can surely tell that even if the tool did not free me of routine work connected with object identification, but I can be sure now that when I got to the control using My@WndTrepanat, my script will work stable and I can trust their results.
I even have now some good ideas on how to improve the tool to make my life easier J and hopefully, the author will implement it soon. BTW, I like the way author replies to me by email, he really listens! And he is always ready to help even if the information might be already somewhere in the product documentation and I just missed it.
I strongly recommend that you try the tools presented by the author. They save my time – I don’t like to spend the time on debugging my scripts to find that they stopped running fine due to some of the objects which cannot be found – I just too lazy for that and here is where My@WndTrepanat does it irreplaceable job! It may be difficult to start using them, but don’t be afraid and write to the author in case of any questions. I believe he will be always happy to help!
Also I believe that you will find soon that you have got some free time, so why not start to write a book :-). Alex T.
